INCIDENTAL FISHING OF SHARKS
INCIDENTAL FISHING OF SHARKS 013.JPG
PUERTO LÓPEZ, ECUADOR - MAY 15: Thousands of different species of sharks in danger of extinction, many of them have not reached an adult size and of reproductive age, are caught by Ecuadorian and foreign fishing boats, especially by a Chinese fishing fleet, which surrounds the coast Ecuadorian and the protected area of the Galapagos Islands. China's fishing fleet is the one that manages the business of coveted shark meat and fins in a legal and illegal manner in Asian markets. The Ecuadorian government opened the shark bycatch in 2008 with executive decree 902 issued by the former Ecuadorian president, Rafael Correa. The incidental capture of sharks has allowed a greater depopulation of the species of sharks in danger of extinction. The fishing fleets have used artisanal fishing as a justification that allows local fishermen to have an additional income from the sale of sharks on the beaches of Puerto López, Ecuador.
