EXHUMATION IN BELCHITE 008.jpg
BELCHITE, ESPAÑA - NOVEMBER 11 - 2021. The Mariano Castillo Carrasco Association is carrying out the opening of two mass graves in the cemetery of the town of Belchite (Zaragoza), where there are some 150 people shot by local Falangists during the first days of the Spanish Civil War (1936/1939)
The archaeologists of this association believe that there may be another eight mass graves, with another 200 people, outside the cemetery of this town in Zaragoza, who suffered in their flesh the Battle of Belchite, one of the cruelest episodes of the Civil War with about 5,000 dead.
According to the anthropologist José Ignacio Lorenzo “most of the bodies are found with their hands and feet tied behind their backs and lying face down. Some of them are recovered from lime, which greatly slows down the exhumation work”
Many of the relatives of the victims are already contacting the Mariano Castillo Association to undergo DNA tests and be able to recover the bodies of their loved ones.
The search is promoted by said association for the Recovery of the Democratic Memory of Belchite and financed by the central and Aragonese governments, the project is co-directed by the anthropologist José Ignacio Lorenzo, the archaeologists Gonzalo García, Sergio Ibarz and Hugo Chauton and the restorer Eva Sanmartín, who have the collaboration of volunteers and historians.
