HISTORICAL MEMORY. 2022-04-12. TIGUA. COTOPAXI. ECUADOR. Tigua is a town of indigenous and peasant Kichwas, in the province of Cotopaxi, which is 2 hours 16 minutes or 151.6 km from Quito. These indigenous and peasant communities, barely reached by a bus, have suffered for decades from the abandonment of the State and the political class. Although the trip from the Ecuadorian capital is a journey through a spectacular area full of Andean landscapes, little tourism has been promoted in the area, to the benefit of the communities that inhabit and care for it.
The TIGUA MASKS are made of wood and painted with striking acrylic colors, in which animals of the Andean worldview and Amazonian worldview are portrayed, such as condors, hummingbirds, wolves, monkeys and bears. Popular characters from the festivals are also portrayed, such as the Devil Huma - Diablo huma, Danzante de Pujilí, clowns, skulls and devils of different colors, which are the portraits of the Spanish conquerors.
