DOMINGO DE RAMOS 019.JPG
QUITO, ECUADOR - ABRIL- 01- 20087. The churches in the historic center of the Ecuadorian capital, Quito, celebrate every year the religious festival of Palm Sunday, within Holy Week. In the Catholic liturgy, it is the first day of Holy Week and the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem is celebrated on the back of a donkey, a prelude to his Passion, Death and Resurrection. On Palm Sunday a special liturgy is held, and bouquets (made with palm leaves and olive branches) are blessed, before mass. In Ecuador, the Catholic Church asked its faithful not to cut the leaves of the palms, due to the danger of extinction of this variety due to global warming of the planet.
