PILLARO, ECUADOR - JANUARY 1: Pillaro Devil´s Dance / La Diablada de Píllaro starts every first of January with the appearance of the guarichas, the devils, the capariches and las parejas de línea who arrive at the concentration sites, those old mansions that last over time.
Píllaro is a town located in the heart of the Andes of Ecuador. The word Píllaro comes from the cayapa Pilla = lightning and Ru = Hole, and the meaning of Píllaro is the basin of the lightning. Píllaro as Rumiñahui are symbols of rebellion and freedom struggle.
The guarichas, the devils and the capariches are the characters of the Diablada de Píllaro and they wear multicoloured costumes with colourful masks. His body is full of energy to dance to the rhythm of the village band that sings songs.
