ECUADOR FLORICULTURE IN CRISIS 015.jpg
EL BOLILLO, FEBRUARY 19. Ecuador's flower exports have been one of the most affected sectors since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Until 2019, floriculture was the fourth primary non-oil export product in Ecuador and the largest generator of employment per productive hectare. This has changed in 2020, where each month the fall in exports became more pronounced. Ecuadorian flower companies have been the largest employer in the Andean area, which mostly has a population of indigenous origin who speak Kichwa as their mother tongue. In its plants, 51% of its workforce is for women, who due to their adaptation to the requirements of the international rose market, are the people in charge of most of the steps for the verification of the different sizes and characteristics of export roses in El Bolillo, Cotopaxi, February 19, 2021.
