MAJAGUAL THE MANGROVE 031.JPG
MAJAGUAL OLMEDO. ECUADOR. JULY, 14 - 2007: In Majagual, Olmedo parish, in the Esmeraldas province, northwest of Ecuador, the Afro communities that live there preserve the tallest mangroves in the world. The Majagual mangroves reach a height of up to 65.2 meters and are distributed over an area of 200 hectares. The red mangrove predominates, but there are also black, white and bocuncillo mangroves. The tallest mangrove specimen is the Risofora Mangle species. This area belongs to the Mataje-Cayapas natural reserve area, which includes a total of 22 thousand hectares of mangroves in the north of Esmeraldas. An Afro community of just 500 inhabitants lived in Olmedo, which defends the natural wealth of its mangroves every day. Since 2005, the community has waged a fight for the conservation of its mangroves, in the face of the looting of the shrimp farms installed in the area. Photo archive taken in the period 2006-2007.
